  • Avalanche Warning

Good snowpack stability does not exist in the southern mountains - the southern Gallatin and southern Madison Ranges including the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone. Tests on Friday showed wide-spread collapsing and cracking of the snowpack in the Lionhead area. The weak layer is surface hoar buried 15 – 18 inches beneath the surface. Surface hoar has also been reported in Cabin Creek and, for the time being, we are assuming it exists in all drainages from the Taylor Fork south. This layer will be especially active on lee slopes where it has been buried by wind transported snow. Today, the avalanche danger in the southern Gallatin and southern Madison Ranges, as well as the Lionhead area near West Yellowstone in HIGH on all recently wind-loaded slope steeper then 35 degrees. All other slopes have a CONSIDERABLE danger.
